Frequently Asked Questions

Q:
What is PDF and the ADOBE READER

A:
In the early days, most documents were created with a word processor such as Microsoft WORD or Corel WORDPERFECT.
These documents were a great leap forward from the old BANK STREET WRITER most of us used when when were first introduced to the computer.
Their advantage lay in their ability to create documents using the graphics and fonts that resided on the hard drive of the LOCAL computer.
Along with EMAIL and the INTERNET came a need to create PORTABLE DOCUMENTS that could reproduce on EXTERNAL computers. Unless these EXTERNAL computers contained a copy of the original fonts and graphics, the document would not reproduce accurately.
A company called ADOBE recognised a niche market and developed a system whereby documents created through a word-processor would be converted in such a way that the TEXT,GRAPHICS, and FONTS would reproduce accurately on an EXTERNAL computer.
These documents are refered to as PDF documents - and can be identified by the PDF extension [ eg menu.pdf ]
To reproduce these documents, the ADOBE READER must be pre-installed on the EXTERNAL computer. This reader is available FREE of charge from ADOBE.COM .
NALEKET also ships a copy of the installation program for the ADOBE READER with its CD ROM disks.
